BIM Helps German City After Flooding Disaster

BIM Experts Develop Comprehensive BIM Model of Eifel City

door Marco van der Hoeven

Formitas AG is aiding the city of Schleiden, which was severely affected by the 2021 flood disaster, in its transition to digital infrastructure. The city, located in the Eifel region, has entrusted the Cologne team of digitalization specialists with strategic BIM (Building Information Modeling) consulting, change management, CDE (Common Data Environment) selection, deployment, and development, as well as BIM management, overall coordination, and modeling.

The objective is to rapidly establish a robust, structured data foundation to provide city employees with comprehensive insights into both planned and operational buildings and facilities, including their analysis. The “Digital Schleiden” project, set to begin in 2024, aims for completion by 2026.

“Schleiden was hit much harder by the July 2021 flood than even century-flood predictions had anticipated. We are honored that the city trusts us to guide them towards creating a digital twin and to expedite the process of restoring the damaged infrastructure for its citizens,” stated Freddy Karibushi, BIM Manager at Formitas.

Digital Representation of City Buildings and Projects

Leveraging state funding from the NRW Reconstruction Fund 2021, the city of Schleiden intends to create an integrated digital model of its buildings and facilities, thereby making the management of city projects more efficient. This endeavor will be entirely executed using Building Information Modeling. The tender emphasized the need for all BIM services to be provided by a single source, a requirement that Formitas AG is equipped to fulfill. Planned projects include new constructions of a municipal depot, fire station, bridges, and a primary school, as well as the renovation of other schools.

The city of Schleiden, located in the Euskirchen district of North Rhine-Westphalia, is intersected by the Olef and Urft rivers. Consequently, the city area suffered substantial damage during the flood disaster of July 14 and 15, 2021.
