China Medical University Hospital Global No.1 Smart Hospital with Digital Twin

door Pieter Werner

China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) in Taiwan scored 370 out of 400 on the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Digital Health Indicator (DHI) for the year 2023. This score positions CMUH as the first smart hospital in Taiwan to reach this level and marks its second recognition by HIMSS DHI in smart hospital initiatives.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Cho Der-Yang, CMUH has developed an AI medical center aimed at integrating medical information, enhancing administrative efficiency, and improving patient care. A key feature of this initiative is the “AI-enabled ICU Command Center,” which employs a digital twin to integrate extensive healthcare data and utilizes AI prediction technologies. These technologies include the Intelligent Anti-Microbial System (i.A.M.S.), Smart Heart Platform, and ARDiTeX (ARDS Tech System), contributing to the real-time remote monitoring of critical care patients and a reduction in the infection rate of resistant strains.

CMUH’s advancements also extend to remote healthcare, especially in rural areas. AI technologies are used for rapid detection of pre-hospital myocardial infarction and in the interpretation of ophthalmoscopy reports for diabetic patient care in remote areas. The CMUH App, featuring a virtual National Health Insurance card, offers functionalities for health management and self-care, with a significant monthly user base.

Superintendent Der-Yang Cho highlights CMUH’s focus on aligning with the HIMSS DHI’s four key aspects: Interoperability, Person-Enabled Health, Predictive Analytics, and Governance & Workforce. This approach integrates IT and AI with infrastructure improvements, aiming to enhance healthcare worker efficiency and patient care quality.

CMUH has also received other recognitions, including being listed in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospital 2023-2024” and “World’s Best Smart Hospital 2024”. The hospital achieved HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 re-certification, INFRAM Stage 7, and AMAM Stage 6 certifications, and received the HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence 2023.

Vice Superintendent Oscar Lee commented on CMUH’s use of cloud-based big data and medical AI in achieving operational efficiency and certifications.

Additionally, CMUH has developed the “AI-Assisted Nurse” to enhance nursing practices. This technology, led by Dr. Wei-Chun Wang of the CMUH AI Center, supports image analysis, efficient record-keeping, automated record creation, enhanced communication, and prompt recommendations in nursing care. It aims to improve the efficiency, quality, and patient experience in healthcare services.
