Formitas Launches AI-Based BIM Mentor

door Pieter Werner

A new AI-based chatbot has been introduced to support users in understanding the concepts, processes, and software involved in Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Germany. Developed by Formitas AG, the “BIM-Mentor” is based on a ChatGPT extension and has been trained with basic BIM knowledge. This tool allows users to learn about the BIM methodology and assess its potential benefits for their companies.

According to Caris Flatten, Digital Engineer and Head of Digital Transformation Advancement at Formitas AG, the BIM-Mentor is designed to provide orientation and advice for BIM beginners. It is not intended to manage BIM projects or replace experienced BIM experts. Instead, it offers an accessible introduction to Building Information Modeling and suggests possible next steps.

The BIM-Mentor provides answers to basic questions about BIM, drawing on knowledge specific to the German market from technical literature, handbooks, standards, guidelines, project documentation, and official documentation. This includes information on awarding criteria, the BIM Master Plan for federal buildings, and sample AIAs and BAPs. Users can choose from suggested BIM questions or ask their own questions on introductory topics.

The BIM-Mentor is accessible with a registered ChatGPT account and can be found through the search function “BIM-Mentor” by Formitas AG or via a provided link. Like many language models, its responses are not legally binding and should be verified if necessary.

Formitas AG also collaborates with clients to develop customized AI solutions tailored to specific use cases and company requirements. These specialized AI models are more cost-effective than those from larger providers and can be used complementarily. Data and intellectual property rights remain within the company. The development process includes goal-setting workshops, needs assessment, current state data analysis, model development and testing, model environment architecture, data preparation for the desired state, implementation, and training.
