HTC VIVE has announced its latest addition to its devices – the self-tracking VR tracker, designed to simplify full-body tracking. The device is still in development and doesn’t even have a name, but this device should eliminate the need for additional base stations. This should make full-body VR tracking much easier and more convenient for users.
To make it easier and more affordable for users to track their entire body in a virtual world, HTC has announced a new VR tracker. This devices features two high field-of-view cameras, an onboard processor, and the same high-precision positional tracking algorithm used in the HTC VIVE Focus 3 and HTC VIVE XR Elite. With a weight of less than 100 grams, the new device is approximately 50% smaller than the VIVE Tracker 3.0. It also comes with a new quick-release mechanism, allowing users to swap the device within seconds.
Compatibility with non-VIVE headsets and OpenXR
While the tracker is designed for VIVE Focus 3 and XR Elite, it is also compatible with non-VIVE headsets through its compatibility with OpenXR. Standalone use is supported for those not interested in VR functionality. The company plans to release more details regarding these features soon.
Shen Ye, global head of product at VIVE, said that the new tracker can perfectly track its location without relying on external sensors or the headset cameras. This means that it can track large-scale play spaces as well. The VR tracker is not just for object tracking; it can be combined with controllers to get full-body tracking. Users can connect up to five trackers at the same time to VIVE’s upcoming USBC dongle, enabling tracking of the entire body, including elbows, legs and feet.
Launch VR tracker later this year
HTC VIVE’s self-tracking VR tracker is set to launch later this year. Overall, HTC’s new device is designed to make full-body tracking more accessible and enjoyable for users. Since it’s compact and should be easy-to-use, the device should be a game changer for users.
