Lufthansa Aviation Training (LAT), in collaboration with Apple and 3spin Learning, is implementing a new approach in crew training, integrating Apple’s Vision Pro technology. This initiative represents a transition from traditional training methods to a more interactive format that incorporates Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
LAT has incorporated VR into its training programs for several years, conducting around 20,000 training sessions annually at VR hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. This approach has contributed to improvements in training efficiency and cost reductions. The introduction of Apple’s Vision Pro aims to enhance the realism of training by combining virtual scenarios with actual environments.
A key development in this project is the creation of a de-escalation training module for Vision Pro, the first of its kind in aviation training. This module uses AI to simulate diverse passenger behaviors, offering varied scenarios for crew members to manage. The module underwent extensive testing before its official U.S. launch in early February.
The training utilizes Apple’s Vision Pro for “Spatial Computing,” merging a virtual cabin with the real surroundings of the training center. This blend is augmented by AI algorithms to provide personalized learning experiences. Instructors can give real-time feedback and alter scenarios and passenger behavior during training sessions, ensuring each session is unique.
Gilad Scherpf, Senior Director of Aviation Training Development at the Lufthansa Group, expressed optimism about the possibilities offered by Apple’s Vision Pro for aviation training. Thomas Hoger, Co-Founder of 3spin Learning, also commented on the impact of combining AI and Spatial Computing in soft skills training, emphasizing the ease of content creation with their authoring tool and the potential for rapid adoption of this training method.
The partnership between LAT, Apple, and 3spin Learning continues to focus on refining and integrating this technology into existing training programs and developing additional scenarios based on customer needs.
Lufthansa Aviation Training, with its competencies in training flight and cabin crews, operates ten training locations worldwide and employs around 800 people. Serving more than 250 airlines, including Lufthansa Group airlines, LAT manages approximately 200 training devices and is affiliated with the European Flight Academy for flight school operations.
