Meta, in a surprising development reported by insiders, is said to be cutting ties with its advanced mixed-reality headset, the Quest Pro, including discontinuing work on a potential Quest Pro 2. The reported decision has come amidst the impending release of their latest headset, the Meta Quest 3, and the debut of their new social media platform, Threads.
Sources cited by The Information indicate that Meta alerted its suppliers earlier in the year that there would be no further need for components for the Quest Pro. Manufacturer Goertek is said to carry on production only until current material stocks are exhausted.
The Quest Pro, which was launched as recently as last October, was met with considerable backlash from the mixed reality community. Despite being promoted as a professional VR/AR headset, its bulky design and mediocre software drew sharp criticism. Furthermore, the initial steep pricing of $1,500 led to outrage, prompting a price drop to $1,000 by Meta.
Simultaneously, Meta is reportedly ramping up for the launch of the Quest 3, marking almost three years since the release of its predecessor. According to internal reports, the new iteration will offer a superior XR experience with a higher resolution, a depth sensor, and two 4MP cameras.
