Open-source AR monocle is ready for adaptation

door Anne van den Berg

Instead of buying a complete new set of AR glasses, there is a new device you can use on your current (reading) glasses. This AR device, called Brilliant Monocle, is an open-source device designed for modification. The open-source AR monocle can be adapted for any AR game, app design, computer vision research or machine learning based image augmentation, according to the developers.

According to the developers of the Brilliant Monocle, the open-source AR monocle is ready to be hacked. This device is, in other words, adaptable to the wishes of the user and the application they want to use the monocle for. They suggest that the glass is used for AR games, app design, research purposes or image augmentation based on machine learning. All they do is offer the open-source version of an AR device.

The device has a 640×400 color OLED display and a 20-degree FOV optical body. Also included is a SMP camera, microphone, Bluetooth 5.2 and touch buttons. The device is controlled using these two buttons. Including double taps, long presses and various other gestures. Included is FPGA-based acceleration for ML or CV, a 70mAh internal battery and a full-featured MicroPython-based OS.

The monocle can be set on top of normal or reading glasses but can also be used as a traditional monocle. It comes with a USB-C cable and charging case, that can be used up to six times on one charge. There is also a companion app available for both iOS and Android devices.
