Re;memory brings deceased loved ones to life with AI

door Anne van den Berg

At the end of 2022, the South Korean company DeepBrain AI launched Re;memory, an AI service for bereaved people. Thanks to a digital twin that is created before someone dies, that person can talk to next of kin after his death. The deceased loved one can also attend his or her own memorial service. For the development of the virtual copy, the main character must travel to South Korea before his death.

If someone wants to leave a message for their loved ones, they can now do so thanks to DeepBrain AI’s new Re;memory service. But this doesn’t happen casually: the person must first travel to South Korea to have about seven hours of footage, personal information and messages to relatives recorded. “To get a digital twin made, let’s have them say about three hundred sentences,” said CEO Eric Jang.

AI then uses all captured information to develop a digital twin. Jang: “The cost of producing a digital twin has fallen dramatically. Previously it was only used by companies because of the costs, but that has now changed.” Thanks to the digital twin, next of kin can talk to or listen to deceased loves ones for about thirty minutes after their passing.

The meeting can take place anywhere in the world, but in South Korea, DeepBrain AI has a private meeting room with a 400-inch screen to make the deceased loved one appear larger and make the meeting even more real. The deceased can also attend his own memorial service and have a chat. Or he can leave a personalized biographical video for each family member.

An AI human as official ambassador

Incidentally, the AI technology is used for more purposes than talking to relatives. For example, the digital twin of Kim Ju-Ha, the presenter of MBN News, is used to present the news in the afternoon. In addition, the People Power Party (PPP) deployed the AI Yoon Seok-Yeoul as part of the 20th presidential campaign. Insurer AIA Life also has an AI human as its official ambassador.

DeepBrain AI raised another $ 44 million in August 2022 during a B Series investment round. This investment contributes to the expansion to the United States and China. Part of this is the relocation of the head office to the US. According to CEO Eric Jang, the organization is doing well: where the revenue was 2.5 million dollars in 2021, 2022 should be closed with a turnover of 7 million dollars.

Three more services from DeepBrain AI

In addition to Re;memory, the organization provides other AI services, such as AI STUDIOS, where a script with AI is converted to video. Or AI KIOSK with which the company supplies a complete hardware and software package for virtual employees at the edge or in the cloud. Re;memory is based on the AI HUMAN service, which organizations also use as a virtual employee who interacts with customers based on natural language processing.
