The Elf Sensor Tour Highlights How Government Can Turn Data into Useful Information

door Marco van der Hoeven

‘Measure to Know’. This principle is especially true for the vast amounts of data available to governmental institutions like municipalities, provinces, or water authorities. Particularly, sensors can provide current and practical data that, when used effectively, can lead to better-informed decision-making. Allinq Digital, experts in what’s known as Smart Asset Management, will soon demonstrate at an accessible event how governments can transform data into valuable information.

Jasper Habermehl, responsible for Smart Asset Management at Allinq, explains: “We’re showcasing a solution through which the government can make a significant impact. Data becomes most valuable when its interconnectedness is made clear, and a city is a prime ecosystem for abundant data flows. During the Elf Sensor Tour, we aim to show participants how to effectively harness this data. We won’t delve deeply into the underlying technology but will focus on practical insights derived from the data.”

Making Progress

He continues: “This approach allows for rapid advancement. And the time is right. The number of sensors in use is increasing while their cost is decreasing. Additionally, ease of use is improving, allowing for a better understanding of data in its entirety. That’s when it becomes truly interesting.”

This is particularly relevant for the challenges faced by governments. To make well-informed decisions on critical issues, access to the right data is crucial. “That’s where sensors can assist. When people realize the possibilities, it often opens up a new world for them, and that’s what we aim to achieve with the Elf Sensor Tour.”

Complexity

Co-initiator Wecity, which provides data-driven services in public spaces, notes that complexity often lies not in the technology, but in organization: Who is responsible for what within a municipality? How should processes be structured? This vision aligns with the event’s focus, which is not on the technology itself, but on the usefulness of data and practical approaches.

The benefits are numerous. In addition to informed decision-making, sensor data can lead to energy savings for assets in public spaces or buildings, and ‘predictive maintenance’ can significantly reduce the costs of repairing faults.
