Under the name Mocopi, Sony has developed light weight motion trackers. You can use the devices in YouTube videos or in social VR platforms such as VRChat. But you can also feed your movements into 3D animation programs or other 3D software, making it easier to make an animation movie. Plus, Mocopi should be compatible with platforms such as Unity and Autodesk’s MotionBuilder.
The Mocopi trackers will first be released in Japan only and the roll-out to other countries isn’t obvious or clear. But if you are in Japan, you can use the motion trackers with PC’s VR headsets and the Meta Quest 2. It isn’t clear however if the trackers with Sony’s own PSVR 2. Also, you need a smartphone with Bluetooth to connect the six individually labeled motion-tracking bands to. You wear the bands on your feet, hands, head and back.
Motion trackers for VRChat
The motion trackers record your movements and provide you with a variety of data points that can be used for YouTube videos or on social VR platforms like VRChat. To VRscout, Jesse Joundry, VRChat CTO and co-founder, stated: “With the introduction of Sony’s Mocopi, we can provide the same functionality for standalone VR headsets. In combination with Mocopi, we would like users of all headsets to fully experience the full tracking function of VRChat.”
Sony has also released a software development kit that allows you to import your movement into 3D animation programs and various other 3D software. Also, Mocopi will be compatible with platforms such as Unity and Autodesk’ MotionBuilder for animation. Sony claims that this will allow businesses to create new services related to fitness, the metaverse and animation.
Dustproof and waterproof
Each sensor is designed to last up to 10 hours and can be charged using a standard USB-C cable. The device is also dustproof, waterproof, and compatible with most iPhone models using iOS 15.7.1 and any Android 11 device or higher. Whether users will need a dedicated app to track and record movement is unclear.
