On the 22nd of February 2023, Sony has released the PlayStation VR2, the next iteration on Sony’s virtual reality headset. This PSVR2 has new features such as headset-based haptic feedback, eye-tracking technology, new Sense Controllers and 3D audio. Also, the new headset should be more comfortable, allowing for gamers to play longer. Alongside the improved headset, Sony launched over 30 games to be available for VR right now.
The official release of the PlayStation VR2 follows almost a year after the first announcements of the improved headset. Now that it’s here, Sony also launched over 30 titles to be available for virtual reality, such as Grand Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village and Star Wars. The PSVR2 is a iteration on the first Sony VR headset, that was already released in October of 2016.
PlayStation VR2 headset years in the making
In an official statement, Jim Ryan, President & CEO at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “Today marks another exciting milestone in PlayStation’s history, as we kick off a new generation of virtual reality gaming. This moment has been several years in the making, and I’m thrilled that gamers can finally get their hands on PlayStation VR2. Our teams across the company have been working closely alongside some of the industry’s most talented game developers to take this next step in VR gaming — and the quality of work put into these games has been so amazing to see.”
One of the games that is available for the PSVR2 is Horizon Call of the Mountain. In this game gamers can use the eye tracking feature on the PlayStation VR2 to exchange glances with the detailed characters. Or gamers can feel the haptic feedback from the PSVR2 Sense Controller when they put their hand into a water of a flowing river. Also, in Resident Evil Village, the headset feedback lets gamers experience terrifying moments in Dimitrescu Castle.
Thank you for coming on this journey
Ryan continues: “It’s just the beginning for PS VR2, and there will be plenty more experiences to come this year and beyond. Just around the corner, you can look forward to more games yet to launch, including Creed: Rise to Glory – Championship Edition, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners: Chapter 2 Retribution, No Man’s Sky and more. To all our fans, I just want to say thank you for coming on this journey with us. We are truly inspired by your passion and ongoing support and we can’t wait for you to experience this next level of virtual reality gaming.”
