Vuzix reseller OPTAC-X cooperated with Kymeta Corporation to stress test the Vuzix Smart Swim glasses underwater. The glasses did sustain and provided valuable information to a depth of around 6,5 meters. This enables divers to get information during a technical or tactical dive operation or even tele-engineering underwater. Kymeta Corporation provided the mobile satellite to establish connection with the underwater team.
Vuzix specializes in wearable augmented reality (AR) technology, such as smart swim glasses. These glasses were stress tested by Patrick Fullerton, the CEO of partner OPTAC-X of the shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The purpose was to see if the visual strength of the AR-enabled goggles held up at certain depths. A tactical radio was fixed to Fullerton’s tank which communicated with a Kymeta Osprey u8 mobile satellite. The satellite was located roughly 90 meters away.
Smart Swim glasses stress tested underwater
The test pointed out that the system was able to maintain a stable connection until a depth of roughly 6,5 meters. After that point the team experienced signal disruptions. “We achieved diver connectivity without floating an antenna and in challenging sea conditions 90 meters offshore, providing communication to an SES satellite in geosynchronous equatorial orbit over 35,000 kilometers away,” said Fullerton, in an official release.
Vuzix says the smart swim glasses could be used for all underwater operations, such as tele-engineering, tactical and technical dive operations. Fullerton says: “To our knowledge, this is the first dive of its kind and proves that operational, tactical, and maintenance support can be done at sea anywhere around the world. We were excited to collaborate with such an innovative company as Vuzix on this endeavor and look forward to working with them via our new reseller relationship.”
OPTAC-X as a reseller
“We are thrilled to have OPTAC-X become a Vuzix reseller, as well as be a part of such game-changing technology for the undersea, dive, and tactical diving community,” adds Paul Travers, president and CEO of Vuzix. “All of our smart swim glasses offer high degrees of wearability, durability and performance and, importantly for U.S. military customers, they have been designed and are manufactured in the United States.”
Vuzix Smart Swim glasses provide information on compass heading, current pace, total distance, for example. Also, the glasses provide a connection to communicate with people on shore.
